Recently I gave the 2012 Formula One season some thought and came up with this poem. I’ve called it ‘A
Golden Year.’
So
the sun sets on 2012: a golden year
A
year where 24 drivers showed no fear
Travelling around the world in top gear
Hoping
to take glory and along the way shed a tear
Unpredictable
it was drama all the way
But you
need to start at the beginning to have your say
From March to November, eight winners had their day
Ultimately it was
between two gladiators who had it their way
It
started with Button in the land of Oz
Showing his skill and smoothness to deliver victory number one
The storm in Malaysia set the tone
Perez conquered but a
victory chance came and gone
And there was that super Spaniard who delivered in the Sepang zone
China
was next and a long drought ended at last
Mercedes
and Rosberg were too fast
Nico joins the elite in a Shanghai blast
But the team ended the year looking at the past
The
show continued in the midst of a desert storm
Bernie
defied the rebels in the Bahrain dorm
Super Seb show he really does believe
F1
leaves Sakhir breathing a huge sigh of relief
Back
to Europe and a former giant rise from its sleep
McLaren’s fuel blunder opens the door for a Williams bleep
Proud Pastor Maldonado charges to a Barcelona blaze
Celebrations turn to horror by a garage fire which left the paddock in a
daze
The
rich glory of Monaco gives us super six
Michael rolls back the years with a pole mix
But
it is Webber who keeps his cool
And then jumps in the pool
Crazy
Canada and it is the turn of Lewis the calm man
Handling the hungry tyres like a Montreal tan
His girlfriend Nicole was there as his biggest fan
Seven from seven into the pan
Time
for Valencia and time to have a snooze
But
this time the streets provided a real booze
Two failed alternators leave Renault on the run
And
Alonso conquers in the Spanish sun
To leave with the lead in the European fun
Time
to come home
The
Northamptonshire rain means some were told not to visit the British motorsport
dome
A dry race allows
the Bull to pounce
As Aussie Grit takes his second bounce
Rain,
rain, rain was the German story
But this has
nothing to do with a party that is Tory
Fantastic Fernando holds on for more glory
A
demotion for an illegal overtake leads to some Vettel fury
Hungary
was a disappointing show
Finally Hamilton gets back into the title glow
The summer break is a blow
But it is a chance to
breather and bask in the Olympics
Spa
is a place for danger
Grosjean auditions at La Source to be a power ranger
His stupidity though leads to a ban
And as Twittergate explodes on Lewis, Jenson charges back into the title
plan
The
cauldron of Monza is a legend of racing
A double DNF leaves the champions trailing
Hamilton
takes the honours to make it three in a row
British sport can take another stunning bow
So
the start of the Asian leg
A
broken gearbox in Singapore means Lewis has to beg
Victory for Vettel leaves him dreaming of Mystic Meg
Alonso still leads but has received a peg
In
the land of the Rising Sun
Two
in a row means Seb is having fun
Contact with Kimi leaves Fernando in a spin
Kamui
gets an emotional podium but by season’s end, Sauber show him the bin
Korea
is full of Gangnam Style
A handsome hat-trick
for the Special One
His Red Bull chassis is made of sturdy bones
McLaren’s title
challenge ends with a carpet ride
India
wasn’t the best race
Vettel’s streak is as tight as a shoe lace
Five contenders become three in the chase
Three to go and three in
the chase
To
Abu Dhabi and the playground of the rich
A fuel issue leaves the champion in a ditch
He
storms back on raceday to a podium behind the iceman
Kimi comes good – he was always the YES YES YES man!
Yee-haw,
Texas brings on the American dream
A final win for Hamilton before his move to the Merc stream
It is advantage Seb in the title fight
However Alonso simply wouldn’t quit
And
so to the Brazilian samba that didn’t let us down
Ferrari tried
but the Bull held onto both crowns
Button wins the final battle but Vettel wins the war
Three years
running, he had the best car
So
that is the end of this story of action
Young charges rose, new winners joined the circle
Challengers came and went
We said goodbye to a seven-time legend and hello to some new stars
Some
who showed bright sparks
Others who just cost millions of pounds in crashes
The usual
suspects delivered though
Whether it was through free telemetry or crazy radio responses
This
season had it all
We
salute the winners in this golden chapter
Roll on Melbourne 2013
For the start of the next chapter to be written
